Recipe Book
The most common request I get via email is for a paint "recipe" for this, that, or the other. On this page I will list the most frequently-asked recipes, and try my best to keep it organized. In general, I work from the darkest color, up through the lightest highlight. This means that the first color or two of each Recipe are usually the shade color - left in cracks, recesses, and other areas that get little or no direct light - and then comes the "main" color, which covers most of the area, followed by the highlight colors, in order from dark to light. If I deviate from this pattern of working from Dark to Light, I will notate that in the specific recipe.
When I mention an "Ink Glaze", this means the ink has been thinned down approximately 10 to 1 or more with water. The consistency looks more like dirty water than it does ink at this point, and serves to tint all previous layers as well as binding the highlights together, smoothing transitions. Using a very thin glaze allows you to apply several coats to enhance the effect; you can always add more with a dilute glaze, but if the ink concentration is too high, you can never take any away! It's painted on like any other paint; in other words, you don't want to flood the model and let it pool, but rather paint a thin coat of it on over the entire area.
