250 Points

Game One

Witch Hunters Gallery Sisters BLOG Background Battle Reports

Wolf Guard Brother Egil had been charged with supervising a Blood Claw pack out on their first patrol together. To supervise this training exercise he had selected four of the company's scouts to accompany him. The scouts moved out far ahead of the Blood Claws to supervise their movement techniques and to set up some "surprises" for the young ones.

While Wolf Guard Brother Egil and his Wolf Scouts were busy setting up a "surprise," a small transport landed in between his location and the location of his Blood Claws. He found it interesting that the markings on the transport were that of the Adepta Sororitas. He quickly dropped what he was doing and moved towards the location where the transport set down.

Introduction

Our inaugural battle of the Escalation League was only 250 points, which doesn't make for a whole lot of models on the table, or choices in army selection.  I was fielding a squad of 10 Battle Sisters including two armed with Storm Bolters, as well as a five-strong Retributor Squad kitted out with four Heavy Bolters, and a Veteran Sister Superior.  I wanted to pump as many bullets into the Space Wolves as possible before they reached my lines, where they would seriously out-class me in close combat.

My opponent, Patrick, took to the field with a 10-man Blood Claws pack, as well as four Wolf Scouts and a Wolf Guard Battle Leader.  The Scouts would no doubt be kept in Reserve to enter on my table edge; I could only hope for some poor Reserves rolls to keep my firing line actually firing as long as possible.

We used the "Patrol Clash" mission, which essentially means you play 6 turns and simply try to destroy everything on the table, with nary an objective in sight.  Whoever had the most models left on the table at the end of 6 turns would be the winner.

Set Up

I won the roll for Table Edge, and chose the side of the table festooned with ruined buildings to provide both some cover, and an elevated line of sight.  I had to deploy first, and placed my Battle Sister squad just behind a building they could advance up and into on the first turn.  Patrick placed his Blood Claw Pack directly opposite these Sister on a rocky hill.  There was only one place for the Retributors to go, then, in the street between two buildings where the Heavy Bolters would have a clear field of fire on the Blood Claws.  The Scouts, predictably, were kept in Reserve to make use of their special trick.

Turn 1

The Space Wolves won the roll for First Turn, and the Blood Claws hurried off their hill toward a building ruin, trying to use it to block some line of sight from the Retributors who had a bead on them.  Armed with Bolt Pistols, there was no shooting from the Wolves this turn.

The Battle Sister Squad piled into the building, and up onto the second floor.  Their two Storm Bolter fired, but caused no casualties.

The Retributors stayed put, guns a-blazing, but also failed to cause any wounds on the advancing Blood Claws.  Dice rolls, as you can see, are not my friend.

Turn 2

Patrick began the turn by failing his Reserves roll for the Wolf Scouts.  He advance the Blood Claws with all due haste behind the ruined building, ruining any line of sight the Retributors had.  Again, the Wolves did no shooting.

The Sisters in their building stayed put, but the Retributors took the opportunity to get away from the board edge, and scurried toward the corner of a building where they could draw a bead on the Blood Claws in the following turn.

The Battle Sister Squad opened fire on the cowering Blood Claws, and after fistfuls of dice had flown dramatically across the table... one sole Blood Claw was laid low.  So much for my theory of lots of dice is bound to make him fail some saving throws...

Turn 3

Turn 3 began with Patrick making his Reserves Roll, and the Wolf Scouts ominously popping up just behind the building where my Battle Sisters squad was firing from.  They moved right up to it from the edge, in place to climb up to the second level in the Assault Phase.

The Blood Claws moved out from behind cover, toward the Retributor Squad.  They fired their Bolt Pistols finally, and brought down two Sisters with Heavy Bolters.  I decided to leave the Veteran Superior, as even though she was only armed with a Boltgun, her presence kept the unit Faithful.

In the Wolves' Assault Phase, the Scouts charged the Battle Sister Squad, killing two of them.  Thankfully, being in cover gave my girls a LD of 10, striking simultaneously with the Frag Grenade-equipped Scouts.  Two Scouts fell under the weight of attacks from the Sisters, so the combat was a draw.

In the Sisters' turn, the remaining Retributors opened fire with the two remaining Heavy Bolters, and the Superior's Boltgun.  Scoring six hits, I took the chance of using my Faith Point to attempt Divine Guidance... and it actually worked!  They caused 4 Wounds, one of which on a six that could not be saved.  The Blood Claws failed 2 additional Saving Throws, for a total of 3 casualties, forcing a break test.  The Wolves failed the roll, and scampered away from the Retributors 7".

Meanwhile, the embattled Sisters and Scouts failed to cause any Wounds to either side, leaving that combat still a draw.

Turn 4

After fleeing into a rocky hillside, the beginning of Turn 4 looked promising as the Blood Claws could only move two inches out of it on their way back toward the Retributors.  That would keep them nicely out of Assault range, and so I expected to get another nice turn of shooting out of them.  That was... until the Blood Claws fired.  The Bolt Pistol salvo felled another 2 Sisters, leaving one lone girl and her Heavy Bolter.  Of course, she promptly failed her Leadership test, and then went on to roll box cars for her flee distance - taking her right off the edge of the board!  Scratch one squad...

The Scouts kept slowly diminishing the Sisters during the Assault Phases.

Turn 5

In the Assault phase, the Scouts caused four wounds to the Sisters' zero.  The remaining Sisters failed their Leadership test, and the Scouts made a Sweeping Advance, wiping out the Battle Sisters Squad to a man.  Er... to a woman.

Game one went to the Space Wolves, in a decisive removal of anything female from the board!
