Space Girl

Fenryll has several of these "Space Girl" models, and I was never very impressed with the photos I saw online.  Fortunately, I saw these 28mm resin models in person at the Origins convention in Columbus, Ohio, and was stunned to see that many of the Fenryll models were actually quite good.

For the Fourth Annual Female Miniatures Painting Challenge (or "Chick Challenge") hosted by Jason Moses at his True Believers site on The Warp, I decided to paint one of the trio of Space Girls I had purchased.  She is a fun model with just the right mix of weird anime sci-fi and cheesecake, perfect for the Chick Challenge, and I was lucky enough to earn a Second Place in the Sci-Fi category with her.

I wanted some bright, cartoony colors for her bodysuit and armor, while attempting a more military feel for her bizarre weapons and equipment.  I think the teal and orange of her outfit, accented with the cool white, work quite well together, although the orange of her bodysuit is very washed-out in the photos.  I have no idea what the gizmo on the base is supposed to be, but painted it to match the girl herself.

I'm pretty pleased with her visor; I believe this is my first real attempt at Sky-Earth Non-Metallic Metal, and the blending went a lot smoother than I expected.  Along with her orange bodysuit, the flames thrusting from her jet booties have much more depth in real life, although I probably overdid the black smoke a bit, cunningly concealing the work I did on the reverse-highlighted flames (*sigh*).

These resin figures can contain some crazy amounts of detail, although they are a bit brittle and therefore somewhat difficult to work with.  I can say, however, that the Fenryll models are much better in person than they appear to be while browsing online, and I look forward to painting a few more from the sack of them I purchased that day.
